The Best Water Heater for Your Family

water.jpg
Time for a new, more dependable unit?
You work hard for your money, so it only makes sense that you want to get as much life out of the appliances you’ve invested in as possible. The average water heater lasts between 10-12 years. Of course, when it comes to the end of your water heater’s life cycle, you are probably facing some pretty compelling reasons not to wait before replacing it with a new, more dependable unit. For most people, cold showers are a strongly motivating force.

Consider a tankless water heater.
When you are ready to replace your old water heater with a new system, we recommend you consider a tankless version. Tankless water heaters take up less space, conserve energy, and are available in both gas and electric models. In fact, the energy savings is substantial: most tankless water heaters are between 20% and 30% more efficient than traditional water heaters. Even with all of those benefits, the benefit that compels most people to switch to a tankless heater is the unlimited stream of hot water they supply.

The numbers add up!
Just imagine what a difference an unlimited supply of hot water will make for those early morning shower wars before school! While tankless heaters do come at a higher price tag, their owners are quick to tell you they are worth it. And so do the numbers. Tankless water heaters have a life expectancy that can be as much as twice the lifespan of traditional water heaters; up to 20 years. It’s hard to not be impressed with numbers like that.

Is Your Water Heater Ready for Prime Time?

no hot water.jpg
School Days!
If you have a family, you know that when school starts again, everything kicks into high gear. Morning shower routines can be brutal. And every busy mom and dad knows that a sudden, unexpected loss of hot water can quickly cause the equivalent of a Mount Vesuvius level meltdown. Not fun.

Sudden wear & tear on your water heater
That morning shower marathon, as well as the dishwasher and washing machines working round the clock, mean sudden, added wear and tear on your water heater. If there was previously any place where your water heater was needing a little tlc and didn’t get it, chances are you’re about to know about it, and pretty quickly. Remember that Mount Vesuvius reenactment we mentioned?

A water heater inspection is your best insurance.
The typical life expectancy for a water heater is 10-13 years. Still, even if your water heater is only a few years old, it could already be suffering from sediment buildup and corrosion. A water heater inspection is your best insurance that your water heater will be able to endure the rigors of back-to-school season, and see you through the cold winter months ahead. Stay tuned for our next blog, where we’ll discuss what to do when it’s time to replace your water heater.

HEALTHY WATER TRIVIA II

lake.jpg

We know how much you enjoyed our first healthy water trivia challenge, and we have to admit; we loved it too. After all, who doesn’t care about clean, healthy water for good health? It is truly the foundation of a vibrant life. There are still so many fascinating little bits yet to share, like this little factoid: “In a 100-year period, a water molecule spends 98 years in the ocean, 20 months as ice, about 2 weeks in lakes and rivers, and less than a week in the atmosphere.” We just couldn’t resist. Pure Water Plumbing presents to you: Healthy Water Trivia II. Have fun!

HEALTHY WATER TRIVIA II

1. Of all the water on earth, groundwater or water readily accessible in lakes, streams and rivers, what percentage of that water is fresh water?
  1. 35%
  2. 16.25%
     C.   2.5%

2. The human brain consists of:
  1. 2/3 water
  2. 50% water
  3. 75% water

3. The total amount of water in the body of an average adult is:
  1. 5 gallons
  2. 3.333 gallons
  3. 10 gallons

4. True or False: Most of the world's people walk about 45 minutes to reach the nearest source of water.

5. True or False: Each day almost 1,000 children under the age of 5 in Third World countries die as a result of illnesses contracted by use of impure water.

6. True or False: Today, we know of more than 70,000 identified water contaminants.

7. True or False: Contemporary U.S. drinking water standards require a sample meet over 90  different purity specifications to be considered acceptable drinking water quality.

8. 1 gallon of gasoline can contaminate approximately how many gallons of water?
  1. 4 gallons
  2. 750,000 gallons
  3. 1,000 gallons

9. True or False: The chief sources of water contamination today are associated with the post World War II Chemical Age.

10. True or False: If all new sources of contamination were eliminated, the planet’s groundwater would effectively “reset” itself in 10 years; all available groundwater would become 98% free of pollution.

ANSWERS
1. The answer is C. Only 2.5% of all water on earth is fresh water.
2. The answer is C, 75% water. Does that give you a better picture about why it’s so important to drink plenty of clean, pure water to maintain proper hydration levels? If 2/3 sounded more familiar to you, that’s probably because the body as a whole consists of roughly 66% water.
3. C: The number varies greatly based upon weight, but the correct answer for the average adult is approximately 10 gallons.
4. False: The actual average distance travelled to fetch water is at least 3 hours.
5. False - The number of children under the age of 5 in Third World countries that die as a result of illnesses contracted by ingesting contaminated water is actually 10 times higher: 10,000.
6. True.
7. True. While the number varies from state to state, generally speaking there are at least 90 different factors that are measured in testing water for acceptable levels of purity and cleanliness.
8. B: 750,000 gallons
9. True. Chemical contaminants developed in the period during and following World War II, known as the Chemical Age, are widely used today in Industrial and Agricultural applications.
10. True. Of course, while the statement is true, the possibility of achieving this is sadly nonexistent.

HEALTHY WATER TRIVIA

1. How long can a person survive without water?

2. How much water do we need to drink daily for optimal health?

3. True or False: If you have caught a fever, reduce your water intake immediately so your body doesn’t have to work overtime to process it.

4. How long does it typically take for water to leave the stomach after consumption?

5. True or False: If you live in an old house with lead pipelines you could get health problems.

6. How many cases of illness due to water contamination are reported to the Centers for Disease Control annually?

7.  True or False: It’s okay to ingest a little salt water from time to time.

8. Is it true that many lakes and rivers have healing properties in the water and are good to drink from when you want a boost?

9. What things do water treatment facilities work to filter from water in order prevent the diseases, like cholera and typhoid, that they cause?

10. How many people in the world are without safe drinking water?

ANSWERS
1. A person can live for about a month without food, but without water, only about a week before dying of dehydration.
2. The recommended daily consumption level is 2 liters.
3. FALSE! Water regulates the temperature of the human body, so if you have a fever, rest and plenty of fluids are the top prescription for helping the body defeat it.
4.  Five minutes.
5. TRUE! Weathering of the pipelines over time can cause lead to be leached into your water and pour out of the tap into your glass, which is very harmful to your health.
6. The CDC reports that more than 4,000 cases per year of illness due to drinking contaminated water are received.
7. FALSE! Our kidneys can only create urine less salty than salt water. Therefore, to get rid of all the excess salt taken in by drinking seawater, you have to urinate more water than was consumed, which results in death by dehydration.
8. Nope. Drinking water straight from a lake or river is never recommended, as it can be damaging to your health. Don’t risk it - no matter what local lore may say!
9. Bacteria, viruses and parasites found naturally in water.
10. More than 2 billion people on the planet - out of 7 billion total - do not have a safe water supply, about 28.5%.

What’s In My Tap Water?

bad water.jpg

Something In the Water...
Have you been worried about your Middle Tennessee water quality? Some people feel concerned simply because they know a little about some of the harmful contaminants in water that can make their way into your drinking and bathing water. Others, sadly, are experiencing the impact of those contaminants within their home or office water supply, and struggling to find fast, effective ways to deal with it. While we know that municipal water suppliers must comply with federal Safe Water Drinking Act regulations, and is required to regularly test the water for potentially harmful contaminants, that’s little comfort if you are experiencing discoloration and/or staining, “floaters”, or a foul smell with your water.

Here are some of the most common issues:

Turbidity in Water (cloudiness)

Sediment, dirt, sand, clay, silt, silica, sulfur, iron, manganese, industrial waste, and organic substances in the water can cause your water to look milky, hazy or cloudy. This is also impacted by seasonal factors, like temperature, storms and strong weather, and also by the water source.

Discoloration and Staining in Water

What color do you want to see when you turn on the faucet? Oh, that’s right: NO color! But it’s not uncommon for rust to seep into a water supply, causing it to take on a red, orange, brown or yellow tinge that can stain fixtures, as well as clothing, hair, and anything else that touches it. Iron, a common mineral that makes up five percent of the earth’s crust, is typically the culprit. Manganese is often coupled with the iron, and results in a darker staining. While not a danger to your health, the staining creates many issues, and visibly discolored water is unpleasant for cooking and drinking.

Offensive or Concerning Smell in Water

The top reasons your water may emit an unpleasant odor include the impact of contaminants pick up beyond the water source from decaying organic matter or corrosion from pipes, as well as chlorination or other dissolved gases from the treatment plant. It’s not uncommon to experience a fishy, sulfuric, chlorine or funky, earthy smells in your water due to these factors.

From Water Softeners and Water Conditioners to Reverse Osmosis Systems and UV Water Sterilization Systems, Pure Water Plumbing can help you get not only your tap water trouble, but your whole home or office system under control!
