What’s In My Tap Water?

Something In the Water...
Have you been worried about your Middle Tennessee water quality? Some people feel concerned simply because they know a little about some of the harmful contaminants in water that can make their way into your drinking and bathing water. Others, sadly, are experiencing the impact of those contaminants within their home or office water supply, and struggling to find fast, effective ways to deal with it. While we know that municipal water suppliers must comply with federal Safe Water Drinking Act regulations, and is required to regularly test the water for potentially harmful contaminants, that’s little comfort if you are experiencing discoloration and/or staining, “floaters”, or a foul smell with your water.

Here are some of the most common issues:

Turbidity in Water (cloudiness)

Sediment, dirt, sand, clay, silt, silica, sulfur, iron, manganese, industrial waste, and organic substances in the water can cause your water to look milky, hazy or cloudy. This is also impacted by seasonal factors, like temperature, storms and strong weather, and also by the water source.

Discoloration and Staining in Water

What color do you want to see when you turn on the faucet? Oh, that’s right: NO color! But it’s not uncommon for rust to seep into a water supply, causing it to take on a red, orange, brown or yellow tinge that can stain fixtures, as well as clothing, hair, and anything else that touches it. Iron, a common mineral that makes up five percent of the earth’s crust, is typically the culprit. Manganese is often coupled with the iron, and results in a darker staining. While not a danger to your health, the staining creates many issues, and visibly discolored water is unpleasant for cooking and drinking.

Offensive or Concerning Smell in Water

The top reasons your water may emit an unpleasant odor include the impact of contaminants pick up beyond the water source from decaying organic matter or corrosion from pipes, as well as chlorination or other dissolved gases from the treatment plant. It’s not uncommon to experience a fishy, sulfuric, chlorine or funky, earthy smells in your water due to these factors.

What Is Reverse Osmosis?

What Is Reverse Osmosis?
In the world of home water purification systems, installing a Reverse Osmosis Purification System is an increasingly popular choice. Sounds pretty technical, doesn’t it? Actually, osmosis is a phenomenon that occurs in nature, and it’s a pretty vital process in the functions it serves. Some of the most common examples of osmosis include things like the functioning of our kidneys to absorb water from our blood, or the absorption of water from the soil by plants.

In Osmosis, more dilute fluids like water, are naturally drawn to denser fluids, with a greater concentration of minerals and/or other substances, through a semi-permeable membrane.

In Reverse Osmosis, the process is literally reversed by the addition of a high pressure water pump, which forces water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane, filtering out heavier agents within the water. Next it is sifted through a carbon filter, which is especially helpful in removing harmful chlorine.

98% Pure
Reverse Osmosis does an excellent job of removing contaminants from the water, even smaller than one micron. What’s particularly attractive about the RO system is that it generally removes a more expansive list of contaminants than other carbon, faucet or pitcher systems, like nitrates, sodium, and other dissolved inorganic and organic compounds.
The result? Fresh, pure, delicious tasting water!

Your Reverse Osmosis System
Typically, an RO system is designed to filter and store water in a reservoir tank located beneath the faucet, accessed with a separate faucet. When you press the faucet handle for your RO system, it opens the valve, and your drinking water is filtered one final time with a carbon block "polishing filter" before it is dispensed into your glass.

Who Uses RO Systems?
Reverse Osmosis Systems are in wide use today to provide filtered water everywhere, from homes and commercial applications like restaurants, hotels, breweries, car washes, and hospitals. Some install an RO System in the kitchen only, some like to add it to the bathrooms in the home, and still others enjoy a total home system. It’s interesting to note that all RO Systems work the same way. Most even look alike, with the same basic components. The primary difference is the quality of the filters and membranes inside the RO.
