Reverse osmosis uses a membrane that only allows certain ions to pass through drinking water.  Reverse osmosis can remove many types of harmful molecules and ions from your drinking water, including bacteria, and is used in both industrial processes and the production of drinking water. The result is that the harmful particles are retained on the pressurized side of a membrane, while the pure solvent (in this case, water, passes through to your tap. To be "selective", a reverse osmosis filter membrane does not allow large molecules or ions through it’s pores, but does allow the water to pass freely.
